This page explains what "selling" and "sharing" personal information means under U.S. state privacy laws, what JDM of Washington does and does not do, and the three ways you can opt out. We honor opt-out requests from residents of every U.S. state, not only the states that require it.
1. What "Sale" and "Sharing" Mean
Most people think of selling personal information as handing a customer list to another company in exchange for money. State privacy laws use a broader definition. In California, "selling" includes disclosing personal information to a third party for money or anything else of value, and "sharing" means disclosing it for cross-context behavioral advertising, which is advertising targeted to you based on your activity across different websites and apps. Other states use the term "targeted advertising" for the same idea.
Under these definitions, allowing an advertising platform to place a cookie or pixel on a website and use the resulting browsing data to show you ads elsewhere can count as a sale or sharing, even though no money changes hands.
2. What JDM of Washington Does
- We do not sell personal information for money. We have never sold customer lists, email addresses, phone numbers or order histories to anyone, and we have no plans to do so.
- We do not sell or share the personal information of anyone we know to be under 16.
- We may share limited data for targeted advertising. If we use advertising tools such as Meta Pixel or Google Ads, those tools can collect your device identifiers, cookie IDs and the pages and products you viewed on this website. The advertising provider may use that data to show you our ads on other sites and to measure results. This is the only activity that could be considered a "sale" or "sharing" under state law, and you can opt out of it.
The categories of personal information that may be involved are identifiers (cookie IDs, IP address, device information) and internet activity (pages viewed, products viewed, items added to cart). We do not share your name, contact details, payment information or order history for advertising purposes. For a full list of our advertising cookies, see our Cookie Policy.
3. How to Opt Out
You can use any one of the methods below. You do not need to use all three, and you do not need to create an account or explain why you are opting out.
Method 1: Privacy choices on this website
Where available, this website shows a cookie banner on your first visit and a "Your privacy choices" or "Cookie preferences" link, usually in the footer. Turn off advertising (and, if you prefer, analytics) cookies and save your choice. Your preference is stored in a cookie on your browser, so it applies to that browser only. If you clear your cookies or switch to another browser or device, set your preference again.
Method 2: Global Privacy Control
Global Privacy Control (GPC) is a setting built into several browsers and available as an extension for others. When it is turned on, your browser automatically sends an opt-out signal to every website you visit. We treat a GPC signal as a valid request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information and of targeted advertising. No further action is needed. Like the privacy choices tool, GPC works per browser, so enable it on each browser and device you use.
Method 3: Email or phone request
You can also ask us directly. Send an email to jdmofwashington@gmail.com with the subject line "Do not sell or share my personal information", or call 253-929-8444 during business hours. Tell us the email address or phone number you use with us so we can match your request to our records. We will process your request within 15 business days and confirm by email. After that, we will not share information tied to those contact details for targeted advertising, and we will ask any advertising partner that received it in the previous 90 days to stop using it.
Please note that a request by email or phone cannot control cookies already set on your browser. To stop advertising cookies on your device, also use Method 1 or Method 2.
4. What Happens After You Opt Out
- Advertising cookies and pixels will be disabled for your browser (Methods 1 and 2), and we will stop sharing data linked to your contact details (Method 3).
- You may still see our ads online, but they will not be targeted based on your activity on this website.
- Essential cookies that run the cart, checkout and your account continue to work. These are not used for advertising.
- Your order history, warranty records and account are not affected.
- We will not ask you to opt in again for at least 12 months. You can opt back in at any time by changing your privacy choices.
5. Authorized Agents
You may have someone else submit an opt-out request on your behalf, such as a family member, a business associate or a privacy service. The agent should use Method 3 and include your name, your contact details on file, and proof that you authorized them, such as a signed statement or a power of attorney. We may contact you directly to confirm the request before acting on it. Requests sent by GPC or through the privacy choices tool need no authorization because they come from your own browser.
6. No Discrimination
Opting out will never affect how we treat you as a customer. We will not refuse to sell to you, charge you a different price, apply a different warranty, delay your shipment or lower the quality of our service because you exercised a privacy right. The only practical difference is that any online ads you see from us will be less personalized.
7. State-Specific Notes
Washington
Washington does not currently have a comprehensive consumer privacy law, but as a Washington business we extend the opt-out described on this page to all Washington residents. Under the Washington My Health My Data Act, we do not collect, sell or share consumer health data, so there is no health data opt-out to request.
California
This page serves as our "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" notice under the California Consumer Privacy Act and California Privacy Rights Act. California residents also have the right to know, delete and correct their personal information, to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and to be free from discrimination. We do not use sensitive personal information for anything other than completing your order, so there is no separate limit request to make. Details on how to submit other requests are in our Privacy Policy.
Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas and other states
Residents of states with consumer privacy laws have the right to opt out of targeted advertising, the sale of personal data, and profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects. We do not engage in that type of profiling. The methods on this page satisfy the opt-out right for targeted advertising and sale. If we ever decline a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision email with "Privacy appeal" in the subject line, and we will respond within 45 days.
All other states
Even if your state does not require it, we will honor your opt-out request using any of the three methods above.
