This Warranty Policy describes the limited warranty JDM of Washington provides on the used engines and transmissions we sell, what it excludes, the installation steps required to keep it in force, and how to make a claim. Please read it before you buy and before installation begins.
1. Warranty Periods at a Glance
Our warranty covers the head and block internals only. It does not cover any external or electronic component, labor, fluids or shipping. The warranty period depends on the type of product you buy.
| Product type | Warranty period | What is covered |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement engines and transmissions | 90 days from the date of purchase | Head and block internals only |
| Performance swaps (VTEC, turbocharged, supercharged) | 30-60 days start-up warranty from the date of purchase | Head and block internals only |
| Rotary engines and rotary transmissions | No warranty | Sold AS IS |
| All electronic parts (ECU, sensors, coil packs, distributors, etc.) | No warranty | Sold AS IS |
| Front clips, wheels, brakes, body, interior, suspension and other accessories | No warranty | Sold AS IS, all sales final |
For in-state purchases the warranty period begins on the date of purchase. For out-of-state purchases it begins on the date you receive the item (see Section 8).
2. What Is Covered
During the warranty period, we warrant that the internal components of the cylinder head and engine block, or the case and internal gear set of a transmission, are free from defects that prevent the unit from operating. For an engine this means the block, crankshaft, rods, pistons, head casting, camshafts and valve train. For a transmission it means the case, gears, shafts, synchronizers and bearings.
If a covered component is found defective during the warranty period and all conditions in this policy have been met, we will, at our option, repair the defective part or exchange the unit for a comparable replacement. Refunds are issued only if no comparable replacement is available.
3. What Is Not Covered
This warranty does not cover any of the following, all of which are sold AS IS:
- All seals, gaskets and O-rings, including head gaskets, main seals, camshaft and crankshaft seals
- Axles, CV joints and drive shafts
- Power steering pumps, lines and reservoirs
- Water pumps, oil pumps, fuel pumps and vacuum pumps
- Intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds and headers
- Throttle bodies, injectors and fuel rails
- Distributors, coil packs, ignition modules, spark plugs and wiring harnesses
- Alternators, starters, air-conditioning compressors and belts
- Sensors of any kind
- Engine control units (ECU), transmission control units and any other electronic part
- Turbochargers, superchargers, intercoolers, wastegates and blow-off valves
- Timing belts, timing chains, tensioners, guides and idlers
- Clutches, flywheels, pressure plates, torque converters and flex plates
- Engine mounts, brackets, pulleys and plastic trim or covers
- Oil coolers, radiators, hoses and thermostats
- Any part that is not the cylinder head casting, the engine block or their internal components
- Labor, diagnostic fees, towing, rental vehicles, fluids, machine-shop charges and shipping of any kind
- Damage caused by overheating, lack of lubrication, contaminated fluids, improper installation or incorrect tuning
- Normal wear items and consumables
External parts attached to an engine or transmission are included for convenience only. We do not guarantee that they are present, complete or working, and included parts vary per listing.
4. Required Installation Procedures
Because every unit is a used import, the following service steps must be completed during installation. They are a condition of the warranty, and your mechanic's work order must show they were performed.
Oil system overhaul
Flush the oil system, install a new oil pump and filter, and fill with the oil grade specified by the vehicle manufacturer before the first start.
Timing overhaul
Replace the timing belt or chain, tensioner, guides and idlers, and verify timing before start-up. Damage from a failed timing component is not covered.
Cooling system overhaul
Install a new thermostat and water pump, flush the radiator and heater core, inspect or replace hoses, and fill and bleed the system with the correct coolant. Overheating damage is never covered.
Additional requirements
- Replace all seals and gaskets disturbed during installation.
- Use the correct ECU, harness and sensors for the application; electronic parts supplied with the unit are not warranted.
- Follow the manufacturer's break-in and fluid-change recommendations.
5. Conditions That Void the Warranty
The warranty is void, and no claim will be accepted, if any of the following occur:
- The unit is not installed by a certified mechanic within the warranty period.
- The required oil, timing and cooling system overhauls in Section 4 were not performed or cannot be documented.
- The unit has been modified in any way, including porting, boring, aftermarket internals or changes to compression.
- Forced induction or nitrous has been added to a unit not sold as a performance swap, or boost has been raised above the factory level on a performance swap.
- Aftermarket tuning, piggyback controllers or reflashed ECUs are used.
- The unit was run with low or wrong oil, contaminated fluids or without coolant, or was overheated.
- The unit was used in racing or competition.
- The unit was damaged in an accident, by fire, flood or other external cause.
- The unit was disassembled by anyone before we inspected it.
- The warranty has been transferred. It applies only to the original purchaser.
6. Inspection at Pickup or Delivery
Every engine is inspected and hand-turned 15 to 20 times before it leaves our warehouse so you can confirm it is not seized. Repeat this check yourself at pickup or on delivery, before accepting the unit:
- Inspect the exterior for cracks, broken castings or other physical damage, and photograph anything you find.
- Using a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the engine by hand through several full rotations. It should turn smoothly without binding.
- For a shipment, note any damage on the carrier's bill of lading before you sign, and report it to us within 48 hours with photos.
Once you accept the unit at pickup or sign for delivery without noting a problem, we cannot accept any claim for cracks, physical damage or a seized engine. Freight damage is handled through a carrier claim under our Shipping Policy, not under this warranty.
7. How to Make a Defective Engine or Transmission Claim
If you believe a covered component is defective, stop using the unit and contact us within the warranty period. Claims are accepted only from the original purchaser.
Step 1: Notify us
Email jdmofwashington@gmail.com with the subject line "Warranty claim", or call 253-929-8444. Include your order number, the engine or transmission code, the installation date and the problem.
Step 2: Provide mechanic documentation
Within 7 days of notifying us, send the following, all from the certified mechanic who performed the installation, not from the buyer:
- A written work order on the shop's letterhead showing the installation date, vehicle VIN, parts replaced (including oil pump, timing components, water pump and thermostat), fluids used and mileage at installation.
- A written diagnosis of the defect with photos or video, compression or leak-down results where relevant, and the mileage at failure.
- A copy of the mechanic's current certification (for example ASE) and the shop's business license.
Step 3: Our decision
After reviewing the documentation we will decide, at our sole discretion, whether to authorize repair of the defective part or to have the unit returned to us for replacement. We may ask for additional photos or an inspection, and we will respond in writing within 10 business days of receiving a complete claim.
Step 4: Return of the unit
If we authorize a return, the engine or transmission must be returned complete, with every component that was on it when delivered, drained of fluids and securely packed on a pallet or in a crate, with our return authorization number on the shipment. Units that arrive disassembled, incomplete or damaged in return transit will not be accepted.
Costs
Shipping in both directions, removal and reinstallation labor, diagnostic fees, fluids and any other expense are the buyer's responsibility. A replacement unit carries the remaining balance of the original warranty period, not a new one.
8. Out-of-State Purchasers
If you are outside Washington and your order ships to you, the warranty period starts on the day you receive the item rather than on the date of purchase, which compensates you for time in transit. The carrier's proof of delivery sets the start date. All other conditions of this policy still apply.
9. Smog and Emissions
We do not guarantee that any engine or part will pass a smog, emissions or safety inspection in any state. Emissions equipment, catalytic converters and electronic controls are not covered. Performance engines and swaps are sold for off-road use only. It is your responsibility to confirm that a swap is legal where you live; California customers should check CARB requirements. See our Disclaimer.
10. Accessories and Used Parts Sold AS IS
Front clips, wheels, brakes, suspension, body panels, interior pieces and all other used accessories are sold AS IS, WITH ALL FAULTS, with no warranty of any kind. All sales of these items are final, and they cannot be returned or exchanged. Inspect them carefully before paying at pickup or signing for delivery.
11. Limitation of Implied Warranties and Remedies
For engines and transmissions that carry the limited warranty in Section 1, any implied warranty, including any implied warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose, is limited to the duration of the written warranty period shown above. Some states do not allow limitations on how long an implied warranty lasts, so the above limitation may not apply to you. This warranty gives you specific legal rights, and you may also have other rights which vary from state to state.
All other products are sold AS IS, WITH ALL FAULTS, and we disclaim all express and implied warranties on them to the extent permitted by law. Repair or replacement as described here is your sole and exclusive remedy. We are not liable for incidental or consequential damages, including labor, towing, loss of use or damage to other parts of the vehicle. Some states do not allow the exclusion or limitation of incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitation or exclusion may not apply to you.
12. Sales Policy Summary
